CBD for Weight Loss

CBD for Weight Loss

Are you one of the 160 million Americans who are either overweight or obese? Have you been struggling with weight loss, and is it negatively affecting your physical and emotional health?

Maybe you feel tired during the day, and you find it difficult to cope with physically strenuous activities. Or worse, your weight is hurting your self-esteem and confidence, and causing you to feel isolated. Being overweight for a prolonged period has also been linked to health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

CBD is one of the natural supplements that has been gaining popularity recently. While CBD is not a weight loss supplement, many people report that it boosts their overall health and wellness. Some also report that it helps them maintain a healthy weight when combined with proper diet and exercise routines [1].

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant. It has been gaining in prominence after Congress lifted several restrictions on the cultivation and sale of hemp products in 2018.

In this article, we’ll take a more in-depth look into how CBD works, and if it might help you manage your weight.

Understanding CBD & The Body

To understand how CBD works, we should briefly discuss the human endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is responsible for maintaining balance within the human body by regulating various functions like sleep, mood, appetite, immune response, among others.

The endocannabinoid system is made up of 3 components.

  • Endocannabinoids –  Chemical compounds produced by the human body that are similar to ones found in cannabis plants.
  • Cannabinoid receptors – The CB1 and CB2 receptors that get activated by endocannabinoids.
  • Enzymes – Enzymes that break down the endocannabinoids when their job is done.

When something is out of balance, the ECS goes to work. Endocannabinoids activate the CB1 and CB2 receptors to regulate functions that need attention. For example, if your body needs fuel, the ECS reminds you to eat by making you feel hungry.

Once everything is back to an optimal level, the enzymes break down the endocannabinoids since they are no longer needed, thus providing an accurate response.

CBD does not directly interact with the cannabinoid receptors. Although it isn’t clear how CBD interacts with the ECS, there is some evidence to suggest that CBD enhances the activity of the human body’s own cannabinoids.

Along with influencing the ECS, CBD also interacts with several non-cannabinoid receptors in the brain to affect a wide array of functions like sleep, mood, pain, and more.

Can CBD Work for Weight Loss?

In a study conducted with nearly 8,500 people between the ages of 20 and 59 at the University of Miami in Florida, researchers found that cannabis consumers have a 54 percent lower risk of having metabolic syndromes, like increased abdominal fat [3].

The research on CBD is still in its preliminary stages. So, we don’t know if CBD plays a role in weight loss. But based on what we do know, there might be a couple of factors at play.

Metabolism and appetite – The endocannabinoid system plays a critical role in regulating hunger [4] and metabolism [5]. Needless to say, a balanced appetite and proper metabolism will promote a healthy weight. However, the studies are mostly on animals, and more human research is required to support these claims.

Brown fat cells – The human body holds two kinds of fat cells – white and brown. Too much white fat contributes to ailments such as heart disease and diabetes. Brown fat, on the other hand, produces energy and burns calories. There is some evidence to suggest that CBD might promote brown fat cells [2] when combined with a healthy lifestyle (exercise, diet, sleep, etc.).

CBD Dosage for Weight Loss

While there is no prescribed dosage for CBD oil yet, 20-25 mg per day is thought to be a safe daily amount for adults. One of the easiest ways to take CBD oil is through a tincture. You use a dropper to place the desired amount underneath your tongue.

Topicals or gummies are other popular methods for taking CBD. You can experiment with a few different methods to see what works best for you.
